The Great Western Greenway is an award-winning 42km track for cyclists and walkers built on the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line. The start of the Greenway in Achill is just minutes from the door of Achill Cottages. Opened in 2010, the Greenway has established itself as a highly popular attraction for families, couples, groups and individual cyclists, walkers or runners. It offers the longest off-road walking and cycling experience in Ireland. In 2011 the Greenway was the Irish winner of the EU's EDEN Award (European Destination of Excellence). A number of local businesses providing bike hire are available, many of which offer a pick-up and drop-off service so you can choose which stretch of scenic beauty to enjoy and also take it as easy as you like.
