Nestled at the foot of the magnificent Slievemore mountain, and enjoying a south-facing aspect, the Deserted Village was clearly once one of Achill's most desirable propery locations. Today the area houses about 80 cottages in various states of ruin or disrepair, spread along a one mile stretch of ancient pathway. The cottages date from at least the 19th century and probably date to Medieval times, though archaeological investigation suggests that the current structures were actually built on the site of a much older settlement. A walk through the Deserted Village, with its adjacent field systems, offers a unique insight into the way of life of a 19th century Irish village.
